Users Coming Off Anti-Obesity Injections Put On Weight Four Times Faster Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study suggests that individuals who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who end traditional diet and exercise programs.

Research printed in a leading medical journal points out that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"People buying such treatments must be cognizant of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain suggests a return to starting mass in about one and a half years.

Weighing Therapies

The study, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.

The team emphasize that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically see a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

The Reason for the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the injections explains the heightened weight return.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Issue?

Health authorities suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals argue that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.

This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Testimonies

People who have stopped the jabs describe a intense return of cravings.

"I experienced a trigger that goes on and I was suddenly starving," recalled a patient.

This challenge is worsened if patients have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Widespread Use

Figures indicate that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is more common among females than men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and long-term success relies on combined lifestyle changes.
